Yellow Vests Act II: origins, groups and demands

“Act II” is the name used by the 17 October Yellow Vest initiative for the October 24 day of action. It does not describe a single organization or a platform endorsed by every union, student group and protester.

This page explains the name "Act II", the groups behind the calls and the main demands. The routes, times and restrictions are followed in the file dedicated to October 24.

Understanding the debate

The 17 Octobre Gilet Jaune initiative presents October 24 as an “Act II” coming after the day of the 17th. This name comes from its own texts and does not constitute the official name of a unified movement.[1][2]

The Yellow Vests, student organizations, high school students and unions can participate on the same date while maintaining different demands, signatures and calendars.[4][3][1]

Why talk about “Act II”?

After the day of October 17, the coordination published a statement on October 18 requesting a meeting with the president and the continuation of the mobilizations. A new call then sets October 24 and uses the expression “Act II”.[2][1]

The vocabulary takes up the way in which the Yellow Vests have historically numbered days of action. Here, it describes the framing of the initiative that publishes the call; it does not prove that all participants recognize themselves in this label.[1]

Who calls and who supports what?

17 Octobre Gilet Jaune carries the political appeal in Act II. The National High School Coordination is publishing a call for October 22 and 24 focused on establishments, educational resources and the mobilization of youth.[1][3]

The CGT mainly calls for generalizing the strike on November 5. It also indicates that, where conditions are met, it will be made available on October 24 to allow young people and workers to demonstrate in safety.[4]

Social, educational and political demands

The coordination call combines cost of living, income, public services, situation of youth, rights to demonstrate and criticism of police action. It also includes political demands, including the resignation of the president.[1]

The CGT press release emphasizes salaries, pensions, social security, public services and the necessary financing. The high school press release highlights the means of education and the conditions of study. These texts overlap on certain themes without forming a single common program.[4][3]

A common date does not mean a common journey

In Paris, two separate itineraries were examined for October 24. The Police Prefecture has indicated to the media that Bastille–Nation will be able to be held, while the Bastille–Opéra route will be subject to a ban order.[5][6]

This difference illustrates why it is necessary to separate the national appeal, the organization of a local procession and the administrative decision. A declaration, political support and an authorized route do not describe the same thing.[8][5]

The coordination requests a meeting with the president and calls for continued mobilizations.[2]

The text of the initiative explicitly mentions Saturday October 24, 2026 and sets out its demands.[1]

  3. The November 5 strike remains a separate deadline

The CGT calls for a general strike on November 5 and mentions conditional support for the demonstrations on the 24th.[4]

  4. Two routes receive different decisions

Bastille–Nation can be held; Bastille–Opéra is set to be covered by a prohibition order.[5][6]

  5. Day presented as Act II

The actual progress and participation must be documented after the day.[1]

What is confirmed

  • The expression “Act II” appears in the 17 Octobre Gilet Jaune call for October 24, 2026.[1]

  • The CNL, the CGT and the coordination of the Yellow Vests publish separate texts with distinct signatures and calendars.[3][4][1]

  • In Paris, the Bastille–Nation route is announced as being able to take place, with a departure at 2 p.m.; Bastille–Opéra must be banned.[5][6]

What remains to be verified

  • The adherence of each participant to all of the published demands: participating in the same day does not prove the existence of a common program.

  • The total number of actions and participants on October 24: cards and announcements from organizers do not constitute an independent assessment.[7]

  • The political or social effects attributable to Act II: they can only be assessed after the day and from several sources.
